JOHN HEKI AND NENI'S CAMPS
The two Chiefs, with their follower, are encamped near the fresh water Lake Mawai. Nene occupies a strong position, with a wood in his rear and both flanks; at the back of the forest is a creek by which he draws his supplies from the Hokianga district. Between the contending parties is a plain about five miles in length, and the same in breadth. Nene can obtain any supply of provisions by the creek. John Heki has scarcely any food, and is unable to obtain further supplies, as he has already swept the country in his rear. About the 24th April, a body of between three and four hundred Military, under the command of
Colonel Hulm, and fifty of the Kororarilia Refugees, headed by Mr. Hector, departed for the Bay of Islands from Auckland, for the purpose of attacking Honi Heki. The Slams Castle, Velocity, Aurora, and Albert conveyed this body to the Bay. Whether the same •farcical representation will again be enacted, which, on a former occasion sullied the honor of Old. England, we cannot say, but we augur, that from the absence of his Excellency, , and the holy father the Right Reverend the Bishop of New Zealand, something will be done, and that this tine an effort will he made to chastise John Heki, and bis murderous followers.
