INDIAN NEWS.
Singapore papers announce the capture of, several forts, and the instruction of many-' haunts of notorious pirates on the island of? Borneo by H.M.S. Dido, Captain the nourable Henry Keppel, and the steamer f Phlegethon, Captain Scott. " . \ Scinde.—Disease has again made its appearance to a fearful extent in Upper Scinde. -" The general sickness last year, which turned ' the camp into an hospital, was supposed to be - a casual visitation arising from the ties of the season, and was said to have af- - fected equally the Native of the Province, as the British soldiers; and this opinion was strengthened by the robust health which our troops enjoyed in the present year, for so long a time after the inundation of the country. But this agreeable supposition has been dispelled by the sudden and universal prostration of every regiment at Shikapore, while the inhabitants of the town are' said to be comparatively well. The 69th has 500 men in hospital. Captain Hatchell, the adjutant of the Regiment, an officer revered by his mert,-' has fallen a victim to the climate. He was carried to the grave by the non-commissioned officers; and as the funeral procession passedthe hospital, every man who had strength to- : stand rushed out and paid his respects to the - remains of this beloved officer. Of the" 7th '•• Cavalry, only 50 men are capable of duty, arid all the officers are laid up, with the exception of the Major, one Captaiu, and one Sub , - =" altern. The horses are literally starving at their pickets, their being none to feed them. The natives of the country were employe! ia supplying them with water, bat so few coolies could be obtained, that it required a whole day to complete the dut>% Of the troop of Horse Artillery, all the four officers are incapable of duty; both the Staff Sergeants, ,our Havi}dars, and two Naiks among the Native officers, and sixty privates, eighty grooms, and twenty grasscutters are in hospital. The Brigade, a$ a military instrument, may also be regarded as having ceased to exist, and it is apparently at the mercy of the first body of bold Beloches who may venture into the camp.
