A SONG. Hurrah for the Thistle, the true Scottish Thistle, The emblem of Scotia the free aD& the brave, It blooms on the crag -where the stormy ■winds whistle, Or fair in the valley its purple tops wa\e. Though prickly the ca'.yx, and sturdy the stem, And spear-anaed the leaf of my national fiovre:; As worth oft as hid in the rough jagged gem, So nectar is found in the Thistle's heart's core. Then hurrah for, kc. Dunedin as Queen among cities may shine, A*d serenely exult in her eminent men; Unsurpassed upon earth scarce less than divine, Unbounded their mind, universal their ten. But if vain love of country, or birth be thy pride, Thistle of Scotia is no emblem of thee, Independent it flowers o'er the globe far and wide, In liberty boundless as the circling sea. Then hurrah for, &c. No smiles of deceit it sets forth to be pressed, But stands in its glory, proud, fearless and free. Boasts not of beauty to be favoured, caressed, But claims for true hardihood honoured to be. Then true Caledonian wherever you rove, The emblem of Scotia still keep in thine eye, That the -world for true worth thy deeds may approve, While with honour o'er-shadowed you join in the cry. The tempest may howl, and the winter may scowl, But the Thistle despite them unflinching shall biow, O ? er sway of the tyrant or treachery foul, ; J A shield to a friend, and a sword to the foe.
