AMATEUR WRESTLING

WAIHI BOYS COMPETE IN SOUTH AUCKLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS

Waihi was represented at the South Auckland wrestling championships, held at Hamilton last Wednesday, by John Ertel (10.3), Merv. Hearn (10.1), Doug. Robinson (13.2), Bill Weston (9.0) and Rodney Osborne (8.12). The Waihitoys all wrestled very well, and wen sucessful in winning two championships- Rod. Osborne, the bantam weight, and Bill Weston, the feather weight. Doug. Robinson, who was entered for two weights, the heavy and light-heavy, was injured in his first bout and could not continue. This was a blow to Waihi as Robinson was in really good form. Hearn wrestled off for run-ner-up in the lightweights, and in a ’ ery keen tussle, lost the verdict by a very narrow margin. John Ertel was very unlucky to meet McKenzie (runner-up for the New Zealand title) so early but he made things very interesting for all he met. By winning these championships Osborne and Western will be going forward to the New Zealand championships again and, if successful, will possibly represent New Zealand at the Empire Games.
