GOLDFIELDS TOURNAMENT C. E. HOLLIS RETAINS TITLE J. BARRON HOLES IN ONE Excellent entries were received for the annual Goldfields champ-; icnship tournament held on tho Waihi Golf Club’s links during the week-end. There were several low handicap players among the competitors and these provided stiff opposition for the title-holder, C. E. Hoilis. It was a day of triumph for Hollis, however, for after sharing the lead with A. Cahir in the morning round, he returned an excellent 69 in the afternoon to take the title by two strokes from Cahir. It was Hollis’ fourth win in the Goldfields championship, the last three wius being in succession. Another highlight of the day’s play was the hole-in-one achieved by J. Barron, of the Waihi club. This great feat was performed at the eghth hole, a distance of 180 yards. According to eye-witnesses there was no doubt as to the perfection of the shot. It looked like a hole-in-one from the moment the ball left the tee. 'Barron paid the penalty in time-honoured fashion. Detailed results of the tourney are as follows: —
Goldfields Championship (36 holes): C. E. Hollis (Waihi), 73, 69, 142; runner-up, A. Cahir (St. Andiews’), 73, 71—144. Thirty-six Holes Net Medal: A. R. Cleary (Waihi), 67, 67- —134; run-ncr-up, C. E. Elliott (Paeroa), 70, 69—139.
Morning Medal (18 holes net): J. Ban on (Waihi), 69; runner-up, J. Jesney (Waihi), 69. Afternoon Medal (18 holes)’: A. Fletcher (Te Aroha), 69; runnerup, G. Masters (Paeroa), 69. Stableford Bogey: S. Davis (St. Andrews’), 37; runner-up, W. Wotherspoon (Waihi), 35. Teams’ Match (sealed): C. E. Hollis (Waihi), A. R. Cleary (Waihi), T. Johns (Morrinsville) and W. Rapson (Waihi), 137 points. Last Saturday the qualifying round* for the president’s trophy was played. .The concurrent medal was won by H. F. Malyon, 79-12, 67 on a count back from N. H. Rickman, 86-19, 67, and A. R. Cleary, 74-7, 67. W. E. Ludwig, 77-7, 70, filed fourth place. In the semi-final of '- the senior handicap competition C. E. Hollis defeated J. Barron 4 and 2, and M. Haszard defeated F. E. Hunt at the nineteenth. D. Seath defeated E. C. liunstan 2 and 1 in a semi-final of the intermediate championship. F. L. Franklin defeated W. R. Steel at the nineteenth in the semi-final of th§ junior handicap. Intermediate Plate Semi-final: H. E. Rowe beat R. M. Cullen, 1 up. Junior Plate Final: F. Wright beat R. Blackwood, 2 and 1.
The following 16 qualified for the president’s trophy and are drawn for match play on handicap next Saturday: H. F. Malyon v. A. F. Lowrie, R. Quinlan v. C. N. Duthie, W. Wptlierspoon v. J. R. Cullen, F. L. ' Franklin v. A. R. Cleary, W. E. Ludwig v. R. A. Dibble, F. E. Hunt V. E. C. Dunstan, R. M. Cullen v. D. Seath, H. E. Rowe v. r N. H. Rickman.
Sixteen players also qualified for the two flights of eight, for match piay on handicap and are drawn as follows: —
First Flight: J. Mannix v. F. Wright ,W. R. Steel v. M. F. Hasaid, C. Jennings v. W. Meiklejohn, D. Haszard v. W. J. Henderson. Second Flight: H. A. Haszard v. W. Rapson, R. W. King v. J. D. limanus, N. F. Morton v. W. G. Pennell, J. Jesney v. A. J. Dean. Players who are not engaged in the above-mentioned matches may choose partners for a bogey match which carries a trophy for the best card returned.
The committeemen in charge for the day .will be Messrs N. H. Rickman and J. Jesney.
