BOROUGH GASWORKS

MANAGER'S REPORT TO • COUNCIL UTILISING EXCESS TAR Gas made during the months, of Jjmo and July amounted to 3,319,100 cubic feet, against 3,288,800 cubic feet for the same two months of last year, an increase of 30,300 cubic feet, stated the gasworks manager, Mr P. I. Finnel, in his report to the monthly meeting of the Waihi Borough Council on Monday evening. Gas sold by meter for the two months amounted to 2,104,400 cubic feet, against 2,230,000 cubic feet for the previous year, a decrease of 126,600 cubic feet. During the period a severe leak developed in Kenny Street, resulting in a drop in pressure at the east end of the town. This was located and repaired the same day. Kenny Street- main had been opened for a distance of approximately four chains and was found to be full of Y/ater. The main had to be .lifted about 12 inches before the water drained away and this gave the East End a big increase in pressure, continued the report. Ahout six chains of main had still to be inspected. The gas holder had not given any trouble during the period except for a few minor leaks. Advice had been received from the Auckland Gas Company regarding the setting «x>f retorts; the company could not undertake the work within the next 12 months.

In moving the adoption of the report ,the Mayor, Mr H. J. Pickett, mentioned that the tar tanks were approaching the overflow level and now that the. borough had some labour, they should use some of their own tar. He thought a liberal coating of tar and suitable top-dressing should be applied to the main entrance to the cemetery; they should not allow any tar to go to waste. The report was adopted, the matter of the cemetery entrance being left in the foreman'* hand*.
