WAIHI BOWLING CLUB
WAIHI WINS CLOTHIER SHIELD FOURS OTHER COMPETITION RESUI^^J A further stage in the percentage fours' competition, which is now drawing to a close, was reached on the Waihi Bowling Club's green on Saturday. Owing to counter-attract-ions, the attendance was smaller than usual. The" following are the results of games played: T. J. Hicks, W. H. Stainton, W. Rap son; W. Pringle (s.) 27, v. F. Warn, W. Parr, E. Pemberton, T. MacDonald (s.) 17. J. Davis, A. Carlyon, H. Spencer, W. J. Phillips (s.) 22, v. H. Heley, H. Harrison, S. O’Regan, K. Roberts (s ) 17. V. C. Rickard, P. McAra, R. Saunders (s.) 26, v. W. Capamagian* C. Franklin, J. Beeston (s.) 21. The annual competition for the Clothier Shield was held at Te Avolia on Saturday between clubs in the Goldfields centre, Morrinsville, Te Aroha, Paeroa, Thames and Waihi each entering three teams and Kikutaia one. Five rounds were played and one Waihi team —L. W. Graham, C. Dare, A. Moffat and L. McGonagle (s.)—won outright, being undefeated on the day. This is the second occasion on which McGouagle was skipped the winning team in this tournament and he now equals C. R. Dunstan, who has also twice skipped the winners, while S. 11. Thompson, A. Moffat and C. Dare have all been twice in the winning link. The other two Waihi teams— K. Meagher, R. Farrell, H. Anderson and H. Shergold (s.) and F. M. Murray, F. Crawford, S. H. Thompson and J. Mannix (s.) —secured four wins each and the team from Thames, skipped by Twentyman, was the only other team to secure four wins. The arranging of the teams was the work of the selector, Mr A. Moffat, and the results reflect great credit on his judgment. As showing the glorious uncertainty of bowls, it is of interest to note that the strong Paeroa rink, 11. Sliand, E. E. Faulkner, C. C. Webb and T. L. (“Nudger”) Williams (s.) that won the Easter tournament at Thames with 11 consecutive wins, played at Te Aroha on Saturday and did not win a single game. Since the competition was inaugurated about thirty years ago the records show that it has been won by Te Aroha nine times, Waihi six, Paeroa four, Thames twice and Waikino twice. Matamata has also won it three times but they are now included in the Cambridge area, while the honour has yet to gp to MorrinsVille and Hikutaia. Easter Week-end Playing at Thames during Easter K. Chiles, W. Rapson, K. Meagher and L. McGonagle (s.) and H. Anderson, T. Fry, A. Moffat and H. Shergold (s.) each secured five wins but it was necessary to have six to qualify for post section play. T. Hicks, C. Dare, L. Graham and J. Harding (s.) had one win. In the pairs tournament W. Rapson and L. McGonagle had four wins but a team with five wins took the prize. Playing at Auckland in the open Easter fours, which comprised 140 teams, a Waihi rink, R. Murray, F. M. Murray, S. H. Thompson and J. Mannix (s.) secured six wins out of nine games played and lost the otl er three by the smallest of margins.. seven wins were however required to qualify for post-section play.
