Dance music was played by the Waihi Federal Band with interludes by Mr and Mrs Dave Samson and Mr W. Dawson’s orchestra. The function went off with a swing and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves and appreciated the good time played by the band and orchestra. The Monte Carlo was won by Mrs R, Allison and Mr Dave Hartwell. A dainty supper was served by the committee and members of the branch sincerely appreciate the services of the band and of Mr and Mrs Samson and Mr Dawson who have always played voluntarily for these functions.
Book Drive for Soldiers The postmaster’s room presented a busy scene last Saturday morning when the drive for books for soldiers was begun at 9 o’clock. Six cars, diiven by Mrs E. H. Payze, the Rev. A. H. Ivory and Messrs A. H. V. Morgan, A. G. Binnie, W. H. Stainton and J. B. Beeche, each with several boys or girls, set out for their allotted districts. The Girl Guides were well in evidence. About noon the cars began to return and the acting-postmaster, Mr J. T. Holt, reports that the result exceeded his expectation. Many hundreds of books were received and most were in good condition. Mr Holt wishes to thank all donors and if any house was missed he will be pleased to receive any books they have. Shooting; in Private Property
In order to clarify the position with reference to persons being granted permission to shoot over private property by the owner, Mr A. H. Sparke, secretary of the Waihi Acclimatisation Club, lias handed us for publication the following letter which he has received from the secretary of the Auckland society: “Under Section 14 of the Act, no one may shoot on any property in place of the owner of the property without a license unless such person is appointed in writing by the owner. The owner can then not shoot himself and no such appointment is in force or effect unless it is approved by me and a notice of my approval endorsed on the instrument of appointment. In every case where the owner desires to allow someone else to shoot in his place the appointment must be in writing, two copies must be sent to, me signed by the owner. One copy I retain, and I endorse my approval on the other and return it to the shooter for him to carry in place of an ordinary shooting license. When persons are accosted and cannot produce the appointment in writing endorsed by me, they are shooting without a license and should be prosecuted.
