PATRIOTIC CONCERT

SPLENDID EFFORT BY MATAORA

BAY NATIVES

AN EXCELLENT PROGRAMME

Their willingness to help a worthy object in spite of transport and other difficulties was equalled only by the excellence of the fare provided in the Miners’ Hall last Thursday evening, when pupils and ex—pupils of the Mataora Bay Native School, together with Bob Smith’s String Orchestra and the Douglas Children, presented a full variety programme, lovely native melodies, fascinating hula-hulas, exciting liakas, rhythmical action-songs and instrumental items that will be long-remembered by the crowded audience that packed the building upstairs and down. Many would-be patrons had to be turned away. So many and of so high a standard were the items that it would be impossible to individualise; but it should suffice to say that the whole performance reflected great credit not only on each and every one that took part, but also on the headmaster of the Mataora Bay School, Mr George Hamlin, who was largely responsible for the organisation and training; the chairwoman of the School Committee, Mrs Mary Wilson, who assisted the project in every way possible; and other willing helpers who gave aid in a variety of ways. As a result of the concert, patriotic funds will benefit substantially. Towards the close of the programme the lion, secretary-organiser of the Waihi Patriotic Committee, Mr S. IT. Brown, in the unavoidable absence of the chairman, the Mayor, Mr W. M. Wallnutt, expressed the warmest thanks of the committee for the fine performance presented and the splendid financial result achieved, and said he trusted the organisers and artists would give the people of Waihi another opportunity of seeing and hearing them at an early date.
