TE AfcOHA WAGE-EARNERS
PROBLEM FOR COMMITTEE MONEY FQR PATRIOTIC FUND “That while we deplore the necessity for taxation to find patriotic funds it is our opinion, after a wide and long experience, that the only equitable and successful way to raise these funds is by taxation of all,” states a remit forwarded from the Te Aroha inter-zone Patriotic Committee to the secretary of Zbne E (Hamilton) urging that patriotic funds be collected by taxation. “In support of this remit,” continued His Worship the Mayor, Mr L. C. Mackie, “it is unfortunately our ex-, perience. that many people still show complete apathy and further, many will not give to patriotic funds. There is every indication that these people can well afford to give.
“We have appealed and appealed, but of a total of 885 wage earners in Te Aroha over 200 will not give. This fact and even this proportion will not be peculiar to Te Aroha. Possibly tlfese facts are common all over New Zealand. There is only one way to force these people, tax them for patriotic funds. The subscription system has been well tried.
