CONDITIONS DURING OCTOBER
RAINFALL BELOW AVERAGE Weather conditions in Waihi during the month of October are reported on as under by the local official recorder, Mr M. F. Haszard:—
■Barometer: Mean ’ pressure for month' reduced to sea level, 30.139 inches; highest value, 30.374;vinches on the 14th; lowest value, 29.746 inches on the 24th; range, .628 inches.
Temperatures: Mean temperature for .month in screen, 56.8 deg. Fah.; highest maximum, 76 deg. Fah. on the 20th; lowest minimum, 34 deg. Fah. on the 14th; lowest grass minimum, 32 deg. Fah. on the 14th and 16th; mean earth temperature two feet down, 57.9 deg. Fah. Wind: Total run for month, 2716 miles; daily average, 87.6 miles; greatest-run in 24 hours, 294 miles on the 29th.
Rain: Total for month, 4.94 inches; greatest fall in 24 hours, .77 inches on the 18th; number of days on which rain fell, 17.
Sunshine: Total hours of bright sunshine, 202.2; daily average, 6.5 hours; brightest day, 11.7 hours on the 31st; sunless days, 3. Remarks: The month was marked by an unusually high and steady barometer. On the 14th and 16th the temperature dropped just to .freezing point at this station, but in the lower parts of the town and out on the Plains there was a sharp frost and considerable damage was done to early crops. The rainfall was below the average for October, but rain fell on no fewer than 17 days.
