GYMNASTIC D SPLIT

SUCCESSFUL DEMONSTRATION BY WAIHI LADS VALUE OF TRAINING Sponsored by the Waihi Wrestling and Physical Culture Club, the gymnastic display in the Miners’ Hall last evening was v r ell patronised and the audience was highly appreciative of the efforts of the lads, whose work reflected great credit not only on themselves, but also on those who were responsible for their training. The Mayor, Mr W. M. Wallnutt, in his opening remarks, referred to the splendid work being done on behalf of the boys in the gymnasium. Mr H. Cowan, he said, devoted most of his time to the work, and the result was well worth-while. The Government instructor, Mr C. Jones, was to be congratulated for his helpful assistance in organising the display. Mr Jones spoke on behalf of the hoys’ welfare, and said that Mr Cowan was not getting the help that his efforts warranted. The boys were getting free tuition, and he felt sure that the parents appreciated it. Ha (Mr Jones) would willingly help anv effort in sport, or obtain the help required. “It is my job and I will do it,” he said. Mr S. Allen also referred to the valuable work being done by the club,

Class-drill carried out under the instruction, of Mr Jos. Warn was much appreciated, as were three classes in physical drill under Mr Cowan. From the smallest boy to young men, a definite method of the most modern methods of body-building was demonstrated and was followed by tumbling. An exhibition of boxing, wrestling holds and a short wrestling exhibition brought the programme to, a close. “Charlie the Clown’’ was a great success and his many activities provoked much merriment.

All the boys taking part deserve the highest praise and they worked with a will. The various parts taken by willing workers is also appreciated. The installation of a loudspeaker system supplied by Mr R. Binnie was a very great help in making the show a success; in fact, the happy spirit that prevailed was remarkable, and the appreciation shown was most encouraging.
