A MAYORAL CHAIN
THE INSIGNIA TO BE PURCHASED | I i DESIGN APPROVED MAY COST COUNCIL LITTLE Waihi is to have its Mayoral chain, and the expense to the ratepayers will be little or nothing. This- was made plain at the monthly meeting of the Waihi Borough Council on Wednesday evening, when the purchase of the insignia that has caused so much newspaper controversy was further discussed.
The town clerk, Mr E. C. Westbury, read a letter from Messrs Walker and Hall in which the price of £23 3s, subject to market fluctuations, was quoted for a suitable
chain. A drawing of the proposed j chain was enclosed. It showed a cen- j i tral medallion of diver gilt and 1 enamels, bearing the borough coat-of- ) arms, the quarters being a poppet- 1 head, representing the mining imlus- < try; a cow, representing the dairying industry; a sheaf, plenty; and clasped hands, a symbol : of unity. Beneath is the motto (In ' Maori): "By this sign may the weir- f < er, while so doing, be empowered to do what is right." Attractively-da- J signed clasps on which are inscribed . the names and terms of office o~ past . Mayors are attached to the maroon ; riband which carries the medallion. In moving that a chain as des'gn- . ed by Messrs Walker and Hall be purchased, the deputy-Mayor, Cr. S : M. Hovell, suggested that the town t clerk he asked to get into touch with j past Mayors or their families and ask J whether they would bo prepared to , contribute towards the cost. He had, he said, been misreported when . ir was stated that provision for £-15 j for the purchase of a chain had on a j previous occasion been made in the : estimates. He had definitely stated j £25; and now they found the cost j was to be even less. The Mayor, Mr W. M. Wallnutt, had very generously . offered £5 5s towards the purchase, j and Mr .1. L. Gilmour had been good . enough to promise £2 2s in memory j of his late father, Mr T. Gilmour, • who was the second Mayor of Waihi. If the relatives of other past Mayors J responded so handsomely, the cost to the council would be practically nil. Cr. .J. G. Conies seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously. It is expected that the insignia will be completed within a few , weeks. j
