Waihi telegraph With which is incorporated THE WAIHI MINER MONDAY, APRIL 24, 1939. LOCAL AND GENERAL

Successful tenderer for plumbing work for eight new houses at Paeroa for members of the staff of the Public Works Department was Mr R. S. Kallu, of Waihi. Mr Kallu was also the successful tenderer for work in a new police residence at Katikati.

Ex-servicemen are requested to parade at the Drill Hall at 2.15 p.m. to-morrow in connection with the Anzac Day service to be held in the Academy Theatre. Should the weather be unfavourable the men are to meet at the theatre.

During the past 4S hours ended at 8 o'clock this morning the rainfall in Waihi amounted to 5.32 inches, according to the official figures furnished by the weather observer, Mr M. F. Haszard. This, together with the fall ended on Friday morning, .25 inches, and the fall for the 24 hours ended on Saturday morning, .50 inches, make a total for the weekend of 6.7 inches.

April IS was the thirty-third anniversary of the San Francisco earthquake, which ocurred at 5 a.m. on April IS, 1900. The earthquake was followed by a fire, the aggregate damage being estimated at £60,000,000. The number of lives lost was never ascertained, although it amounted to thousands, bodies being found among the wreckage months after the catastrophe. Fourteen other towns in California shared the calamitous effects of the earthquake, and Los Angeles, nearly 500 miles distant, was visited by two shocks.

Attendance at the monthly meeting of the Waihi Pensioners' Association on Friday was again large. The president, Mr G. Leather, presided, and before the business of the meeting was commenced reference was made to the recent death in Auckland of an ex-member, Mr W. Carnachan. A motion of sympathy with the widow and family was carried. Members spoke appreciatively of the recent increase in pensions under the Social Security Act, the first of which at the new scale had been made available that day. Correspondence was received from the Auckland, Thames and Coromandel associations reporting favourable progress in connection with the holding of a combined conference at Thames. Arrangements would probably be linalised this week, it was (stated.

To-morrow, April 25, is Anzac Day : and will be observed as a close holiday. Twenty-fourth anniversary o( the Sunday morning in 1915 when Australian and New Zealand troops received their heroically tragic baptism of fire in the Great War by storming the Heights of Gallipoli, the occasion will not pass unnoticed in Waihi, and citizens are invited by the Mayor, Mr W. M. Wallnutt, to take part in a commemorative service in the Academy Theatre at 2.3 0 o'clock in (lie afternoon. Headed by Iho Waihi Federal and Salvation Army Bunds, as one unit, a procession in which ex-service men and women, military and other organised units, and bodies, including Territorials, members of the Fire Brigade, the St. I John Ambulance Brigade and the Boys' and Girls' Brigades, will take part, will march from the Seddon Monument to the theatre. They are asked to parade in the Drill Hall not later than 2.15 o'clock. The Mayor will preside at the service, and the address will be delivered by Adjutant Barnes, of the Salvation Army.

Owing- to the heavy rain which set in on Saturday morning and the amount of influenza in the district, the opening of the Waihi Rugby's Union's season was postponed until Saturday next.

A very candid correspondent signing himself "Bulldog Breed," sends us the following: "Although all football, tennis and hockey games were abandoned on Saturday owing to the activities of Jupiter Pluvius, I felt a thrill of pride when I saw several golfists who were not of the mollycoddle variety doing their round on the links in spite of the downpour! It was splejidid to see the enthusiasm displayed by these golf men. I wonder if they are spinach eaters?"

The prolonged spell of dry weather has been something of a nightmare to many of our farmers in this district, not to speak of worse conditions in neighbouring districts, according to reports. Although their experiences have been trying, local milk vendors have been able to satisfy the demands of their customers, but the ■ cream cheques for the most part have suffered a big depletion. The generous rainfall during the week-end, totalling just over six inches, will have been joyfully welcomed. It is good to know that the Waikato, the Hauraki Plains and the Bay of Plenty pastures which had been reduced to a sorry plight, have all shared in the replenishing effects of the long-de-ferred rainfall. Reports from further afield, Gisborne, Whangarei and the North Auckland districts, state that these have also greatly benefited by the week-end downpour.
