MINERS PENSIONERS
j MONTHLY MEETING OF WAIHI [ ASSOCIATION. POSITION OF MINERS' WIVES. The usual monthly meeting of the Waihi Miners' Pensioners' Association was held yesterday, there being a good attendance of members. A motion of condolence was passed to the widow and relatives of the late Mr. David Johnston, who was a valued and respected member of the association. All stood in silence for a few moments as a mark of sympathy.
Correspondence from the Minister for Pensions (Hon. W. E. Parry) in connection with the recent conference held at the Thames caused quite a lot of discussion. The pension for miners' wives was considered inadequate and, it was contended, should lie the same as other women's pensions. It was stated that the wife of a pensioner had to be a housekeeper and nurse combined for 10/per week. It was also stated that when a pensioner enters an hospital is a patient his wife and children ire embarrassed through not being ible to draw his pension on the due late (the 23rd).
It was resolved that a delegate be sent direct to Wellington to interview the Pensions Committee in regard t,) the pay to miners' wives.
