CARROT GROWING

GIRLS AND BOYS' AGRICULTURAL CLUB

RESULTS OF COMPETITION The carrot growing competition conducted by the Boys and Girls’ Agricultuarl Club was judged last week by Mr A. J. Gibson, the Education Board’s agricultural instructor, and Mr A. J. Simpson. - Fifteen plots had been entered in the competition but owing to negiect over the long school vacation, only half of these were finally judged. The competitors were required to sow and cultivate a plot of carrots one-sixtietli of an acre in area. The Guerande carrot, a variety that does not require thinning, was chosen for sowing, but as an experiment the

competitors thinned half the plot. In judging, points were allotted as follows: Average yield of plot per acre (in tons), cultivation 40, record chart 20, quality of roots 10. The following were the results of the j judging: D. Murdoch (High School), I yield per acre 33 tons 9cwt, cultivation 30 points, record chart 16J points, quality 7i points, total points S7A; A. O’Neil (High School), IS tons 17cwt, 40, 19, S, 552; G. Matthews (South School), 33 tons 3cwt, 35, 9, S, SSJ; A. Osborne (High |

School), 22 tons 9cwt, 37, 16, 7, 82£; R. Blackmore (High School) 36 tons IScwt, 23, 12, 7, 79; R. McClung (East School), 9 tons 9cwt, 40, 9, si, 64J; G. Morel (Waitawheta), S tons lcwt, 25, 11, 7, 51. Considering this is the club’s first competition, the standard of the plots judged was quite good. Two competitors, A. O'Neil and Roy MeCiUng, deserve special mention for the excellent manner in which their plots were cultivated. The heaviest crop was grown by Roland Blackmore. The unthinned half of his plot weighed out at 51 tons lOcwt per acre, whilst the thinned half yielded 22 tons 6cwt per acre. The seed and fertiliser used in this competition were kindly donated to the club by Frank Winstones, Ltd., I ind the Wallace Supplies, Ltd.
