BOROUGH MATTERS

GAS MANAGER TO BE APPOINTED WITH SOLE CONTROL POSITION OF RELIEF WORKERS At a meeting of the Waihi Borough Council in committee last night to consider a report on the gasworks by Mr H. W. Atkinson, of Auckland, it was decided, following the conference, to invite applications in the four main centres for a working manager, who will have sole control of the works. A communication was received from the Labour Department to the effect that as from June 1 it was expected that the council would subsidise the wages of relief workers employed under the No. 5 scheme, with a view to making the total payment 16s per day. The Council, after discussion, decided to advise the department that it was not in a position to accede tcy the request, and that the services of the relief workers would not be required after May 30. It was also decided to point out to the department that for some years past the council had adopted the 40hour week in respect of its outdoor staff, and had been paying the men 16s a day. It was suggested that the Government should employ the relief workers on necessary public works in the district at a standard rate of pay. Referring to the decision of the council in „ connection with relief workers the local certifying officer, Mr A. E. Lawson, stated that as there was no other employing authority the men working on the Waihi Beach, road would cease work as from Saturday next and be placed on sustenance pending a review of the whole position. It was expected that work about the schools would give employment to several others, but in the event of all the men not being absorbed those not provided for will be placed on sustenance as from Monday next.
