ANOTHER STRIKE?
SEAMEN REFUSE TO MAN STEAMER DISSATISFIED WITH AWARD I VOLUNTEER CREW PROBABLE Australian and N.Z, Cable. SYDNEY, November 29. The Burns Philp steamer Mangola, due to sail to-day for Java, was unable to secure a crew. This is the first ship to call for a crew under the new maritime award set up by Mr Justice Dethridge on November 26 th. It may mean the first shot in the threatened maritime strike, and may influence the Union Company regarding the crew of the Niagara, which is due on Monday.
Although Union Company officials refused to comment, it is considered in shipping circles that a volunteer crew will again be engaged. The seamen in Sydney and Melbourne decided earlier this week to reject the recent new award, given byMr Justice Dethridge. Their objections include the loss of 3d an hour overtime, failure of the court to provide a differential rate for rigging gear for loading and unloading, and loss of “clocking” time for deferred sailing.
