THE THAMES SEAT

WAIHI BOOTHS AND POLLING HOURS SCREENING OF RESULTS There will be a triangular contest for the Thames seat, the candidates being Messrs P. Keegan (Democrat), A. M. Samuel (Independent) and J. Thorn (Labour) and the polling hours from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. The deputy-returning officer for Waihi will be Mr I. T. Fallwell, whose , headquarters Avill be at the Court- ( house (main booth), and other polling places will be the Hast End School, the South School,' .the Waihi each School and the Waihi Plains School. Arrangements have been made for the prompt despatch of both progress and final returns, from all. parts of the electorate : outside ’ Waihi for screening at, the “Waihi Telegraph” office thro'ughout the evening and ag these will be telephoned from headquarters at Thames at frequent intervals residents connected with the service are requested not to ring ’phone 12 after 7 p.m. The results from all over the Dominion will also be announced from this office by wireless as they come through from the principal broadcasting stations, a loudspeaker having been installed for tlfe purpose. In this connection it may be mentioned that after broadcasting local and other returns from 7 p.m. to 8.30 the main stations will link up with 2YA, Wellington, which will broadcast progress results and finals from all electorates. The Auckland, Christchurch and Dunedin stations will re-broadcast the Wellington station, where election information will be concentrated. THE 1931 RETURNS In a straightout contest at the last election (1931) Mr Samuel (Coalition) defeated Mr J. S. Montgomerie (Labour) by 464 votes, the respective totals being 4702 and 4238. When the corrected figures, including absentee and seamen’s votes, were issued the returns from the individual booths were not given, but the totals announced on election night, when Mr Samuel was leading by 385 votes, will give an idea of how the candidates fared at the various polling places.
