MONTHLY MEETING OF (UNI COUNCIL DEPARTMENTAL REPORTS WORKS ABOUT THE TOWN The report on the abattoir for the month of October, compared with the leport for the. same period of last year (given in parentheses) was presented at the monthly meeting of the Waihi Borough Council as follows: —Block slaughtered: Cows, 146 (145), increase 1; bullocks, 7 (3), increase 4; sheep, 284 (303) decrease 19; pigs, 43 (55), decrease 12; calves, '4 (3), increase 1. Total 484 (-509), a net"decrease of 25 animals. Fees received amounted to£B9 lls, compared, with £9O 12s 6d, a decrease of £1 Is 6d. The report was adopted. INSPECTOR’S ACTIVITIES The poundkeeper and inspector, Mr J. Spence, reported as follows for the. period ended on November 16th; Eighteen cows, two calves and three horses were impounded. Notices were served on two parties to cut their hedges, and a large number were ordered to clear cuttings from the road immediately. Ten persons were tested for : driving licenses and passed. The total number of licenses issued to date is 543. The report was adopted. ' GASWORKS REPORT
In the course of a comprehensive report on the department under his control, the gasworks manager, Mr A. T. Harvey, gave the following details (comparisons for September, 1934, in parentheses): Gas made, 848,900 cubic feet (937,900 cubic feet); coal used, 60 tons 12 cwt. (66 tons 3 cwt); make per ton, 14,0006 cubic feet (14,177 cubic feet); coke saved, 7 tons IS cwt. (not available): maximum output for 24 hours, 28,213 cubic feet (not available); sales per to nof coal used, 10,611 cubic feet (not available); unaccounted for gas, 24.4 per cent, (not available). Receipts: Gas £279 16s lid (£265 13s), coke £l3 8s (£23 10s 9d), tar nil,(£l2 3s 3d), fittings £4 0s 9d (£5 9s lOd), sundries, £6 7s 6d (£1 6s). Totals £303 13s 2d (£3OB 2s lOd). Sales as per Journals: Gas £341 15s 2d (£290 6s lid), coke £ls 18s 9d (£29 14s 7d), tar 9s (7s), fittings £6 7s 5d (£l2 7s lid), sundries £4 17s (£7 10s). Totals £369 7s 4d (£340 6s sd).
. , General Remarks: It will be noted , that gas unaccounted for is now 24.4 per cent, as against 27.25 per cent, in August, and sales per ton of coal i used have risen from 10,400 to > 10,611 cubic feet. Mains: The Kensington road main has been com- . pleted, 715 ft of IJ-inch pipe being , used. The Wilson Street main has been completed, 2Soft of 11-inch L pipe being used. Services: Seven , services have been cleared and re- . newed where necessary. Four hew . services were connected up during the month. Street lights: Four lanterns have been repaired and re- . erected. Meters: Seventeen meters have been installed during the month. Califonts: One califont has been installed during the month. ' The report, together with that of the Gasworks Committee, which regarded it as very satisfactory and expressed appreciation at the reduction in unaccounted for gas and the increases in the sales per ton of coal i used and the cash received, was 1 adopted. | WORKS COMMITTEE j Following a tour of inspection prior to its meeting, the Works Committee made the following recommendations; That the engineer be asked to effect repairs to the footpath in Waitete road near Mr G. R. Scothern’s residence. That Mr Keans be given permission during the council’s pleasure to fence off London Street at Gihnour Street; this to be subject to the usual conditions with regard to agreement and advertising. The committee considers the present seating accommodation on the southern side of the baths to be unsafe and (having power to act) instructed thatj.be seating gallery be pulled down and from the best of the timber a form similar to that on the northern side of the baths be erected in its stead. The Tauranga road paddocks were visited. The committee finds that noxious weeds (broom, ragwort and blackberry) are spreading rapidly and generally the area is not in a satisfactory condition.- The engineer is starting immediately to have the weeds cleared from the land and the road frontage. Your committee also considered the closing of various streets as mentioned in Mr J. B. Beeche’s letter. In view of the possibility of the council being put to considerable expense and being unable to reimburse itself,- ; the coriimittee recommends that the' town clerk interview Mr Beeche and 'obtain from him on behalf of his clients an undertaking that they will individually make good to the council any loss it may incur due to the closing of the streets in question. 1 The report was adopted. 1 ENGINEER’S REPORT !
The engineer reported for the four-weekly period ended November 16th as follows: The principal work for the month has been the re-form-ing and grading of streets, with the assistance of the county council’s auto-patrol. The actual time worked by the grader was seven days, and in this time the following streets were reformed and graded: Upper Haszard Street, Devon Street, Canon Street, Savage road and parts of Grey Street and Martin road. The following streets were graded and the shoulders cut back: Oldfield road, Gladstone road, Walmsley road, Boundary road, Mataura road, Matangia road, Stafford Street, Creek road, Clarke Street, Union Street, Evans Street, Johnston Street, Adams Street, Gilmour Street, Meuller Street, Silverton road, Rosemont road, Baber Street, Victoria Street, Martin road Russell Street, Kensington road, Moresby Avenue, Walker Street, Regent Street. Mackay Streep Albert Street, Quarry road, • Robert Street, Bradford Street, Robin Street, Station -road r art'd ; Brown wizard Street, Devon Street and Martin road were dressed wtih raeta}. This formation of Canojx Street* we§t ha§ been continued with relief workers" Footpaths have been chipped and gravelled in Tauranga road, George Street, Kenny Street, Baker Street and Victoria Street. A wooden crossing at the right-of-way in
Moresby Avenue was renewed and one private crossing installed; The bank on Johnston Street at Mr Seath’s property has been removed. The borough paddocks on Tauranga road have been cleared. The small, dam was emptied, cleaned and refilled. A total of 557 ii yards of metal' was handled and distributed as follows: To Beach road 25 yards, cemetery two yards, streets 260 i yards, from creek 270 yards. The greater portion of the metal, crushed, chips and fines, has been stacked in the yard in readiness for- sealing. Crusher: During the month the crushed worked 16 days for an output of 311 yards. The following is a -summary of the working of the trucks: No. 1, days worked 18V number of trips 165, metal carted 39 yards; No. 2, 18|, 205, 200 yards; No. 3, 18, 159, 318 yards. The report was adopted. BEACH IMPROVEMENTS The caretaker at the Waihi Beach reserve, Mr W. Wotherspoon, reported having carried out the following works since returning from his annual leave: The bank at the tennis courts where the slip occurred is now practically finished, there remaining only a small amount of sodding to be done to complete the job. The further extension of 18-Inch piping through Mullinb’ property has now been laid, and two concrete sumps have been made, one at the head of the pipe line and the other near the boundary of the property. Owing to the excessive growth of grass it has been found necessary to do a large amount of scything whero the grass is becoming a nuisance to pedestrian traffic and where the mowing machine is unable to cut it. One section has been leased during the month. The report was adopted.
