SOCIAL PROBLEMS

EFFECT OF INVENTIONS ON INDUSTRIES. SCIENTISTS TO GIVE LEAD. LONDON, September 24. The problem of the disturbing effect of scientific discoveries and applications on industry, which has been referred to by the last three presidents of conferences held by the British Association for the Advancement of Science, has now been set down for discussion in 1934. This move follows pressure exerted by a group of leading scientists at the conference held at Leicester, and the society is shown as intending to give a lead to the world in attacking social chaos.

The general committee of the society has passed a resolution instructing the standing council to “examine every means possible to secure the co-ordination of scientific and social progress, in order to assist in the adjustment of industrial and social conditions in the light of scientific discovery.

At the meeting in 1934 the report of the standing council will be discussed.

It is suggested that each section of the society should examine the application of its branch of research to social problems, co-ordinating with other sections where the problems interlock.
