POWERS OP THE BOARD
STATEMENT BY MINISTER
By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, this day.
In the course of a statement on the subject of the establishment of the Small Farms Board, the Hon. J. G. Coates, originator of the plan, points out that the board has a general mandate to proceed with the settlement of approved persons on small areas of land and thereby to mitigate the distress resulting from unemployment. Under the Act the board is directed to look first for suitable Crown lands. It may also arrange for the acquisition of privately owned land by way of purchase or by lease with the right of purchase. The leases are intended to he for a period of ten years, with the right of purchase after four years from the commencement of the lease. “It will be seen,” added Mr Coates, “that a very great responsibility and considerable powers have been entrusted to the board. At the same time safeguards against injustice have been provided and the Government is satisfied that the administration will be carried out in fairness tc all and with good results.”
