HELP FOR RELIEF WORKERS

APPEAL FROM PUKEKAURI

ROAD CAMP

FOR FRUIT AND VEGETABLES

While the recent revision of ths scale of payments will somewhat improve the position of relief workers throughout the Dominion the married men sent from the cities to camps in country districts will still find it a difficult matter to provide for two homos on their comparatively small earnings. If, however, the line efforts of the 2D workers, mostly returned soldiers, in the Pukekauri road camp (Waihi riding, Ohinemuri County) may lie taken as a criterion of what is being done by the men generally to make ends meet —and presumably .they can—there is reason to hope that the wolf will be kept from, the door pending a return to more prosperous times. In explaining (o a representative of the “Telegraph” the steps taken in this particular camp to keep living costs at the lowest posisble point in order that sufficient may remain to pay rent and clothe and teed their wives and families in Auckland the camp secretary (Mr J. Moody) stated that every source making for economy was taken advantage of. They bought their own food, inlying where they could procure foodstuffs most cheaply, and one of their number, paid on the relief workers’ basis, did the cooking, but oven then the struggle to keep their hepds above water and look after those at home was a very hard one. The men would, said Mr I Moody, welcome gifts of fruit and vegetables as additions to their pro-1 [sent diet and as it was understood that, tiie orchards and kitchen gardens in many parts of Waibi were yielding more than nmt IJie requirement'", of the householders they would bo glad to receive the surplus at the cam]). Tims those who have more fruit and vegetables than are needed in their homes are , afforded an opportunity of helping men who are doing their utmost to help tjiomsolves and those belonging to tliem in these times of stress. No doubt the workers in other camps in the district would also be equally grateful for such gifts
