On four different grounds, the Notv Zealand Educational Institute opposes the abolition of manual training, in primary schools. In a lucent resolution, deploring the suggested abolition, the grounds were given as the following: “(1) That is is among the most important subjects in any modern curriculum; (2) that its abolition would bring ns back to wholly academic teaching, which is quite out of keeping with modern views; (3) that the hand is another sense through which to obtain knowledge—’neglect of which may permanently impair intellectual development; (4) that it is almost the only .means at hand of finding a child’s aptitudes-” An Englishwoman who visited New Zealand last year in company with her husband and family, writing from London to a relative in New Plymouth states: “I now refuse to buy anything but New Zealand butter. The strange part is that the Danish butter is sold at a higher price on the London market than the New Zealand article. To my taste New Zealand is the better butter. Something wrong somewhere!” After pointing out in the House of Representatives that the local bodies collected fees from the licensing of hotels, Mr K. S. Williams suggested it would be of assistance to them if the Licensing Act were amended to enable the location of hotels to be altered to where they were most needed.
