SPLENDID DISPLAY OF BLOOMS

THE PRIZE WINNERS

CHAMPIONSHIP TO MRS BUSCH “Bigger and better than ever,” may be applied to the fine display of chrysanthemums exhibited at the Waihi Girls’ Friendly Society’s annual flower show, opened in the King’s Hall on Thursday afternoon, the profusion of glorious blooms being the product of local gardens. The cup for the champion bloom was Avon by Mrs W. B. Busch, avlio, for the second year in succession, carried off the chief honours in the class and also that for the six best blooms, the runner-up in both cases being Mrs H. Thompson.

THE OFFICIAL OPENING

! lTie vicar, the Rev. H. J. Williams, in calinlg upon the Mayor (Mr W. M. Wallnutt) to officially open the show, paid a high tribute to the members of the society for their splendid effort and Mr Wallnutt, in complying, said it afforded him great pleasure to declare the show open. In doing so he Avould like to make an appeal to one and all to help the society in making its annual effiort a success. On this occasion the results of their effort Avere to be largely devoted to helping those deserving of assistance. He understood that some of the proceeds Avere to go to the Whangamata relief Avorkers camp Avhich he thought was a very considerate idea as the Avorkers Avere much in need of practical sympathy from the community. At the opening of the annual dahlia slioav he had referred to the commendable manner in Avhicli the Girls’ Friendly Society had set out to help individual cases of distress, and he trusted that its present endeavours would be croAvned with tsuccess. His Worship congratulated the executive on the very excellent exhibition of blooms, Avhicli certainly redounded to the credit of the local raisers of flowers. Referring to the improved appearance of the town by the cultivation of flOAvers in the neighbourhood of the public thoroughfares he said the improvement was so marked that he Avas constantly hearing it mentioned by visitors to Waihi, and quite recently tAvo visiting members of Parliament—Messrs P. Fraser and J. W. Munro —had commented on the bright and tidy appearance of the toAvn, Avith particular reference to the flOAver gardens on the Martha Hill approach to the Waihi mine. Mr Fraser had publicly congratulated the community on Avhat had been achieved in this direction Avhen speaking at a public meeting. The Mayor then formally declared the slioav open.

Pastel Drawings: Primers, Teddy Brunton (South School). Se; md primers (South School), Joan Merry. 1; Maureen Wrs:bury, 2 Standard 1, L Payne (South School) 1 SGuirard 2, KaT.h Jamieson (Fas'School) 1, Albert Ormsby (East School), 2. Standard 3, Joan Nuttall (Waikino School) 1. The flOAvers Avere judged by the Rev. J. D. MacFarlane, Avhose decisions gave general satisfaction. Tea Rooms: Mesdames Patton, Leach and Durie. Bran Tub: Miss Atkinson. Sweets: Misses S. Dabinett, Pascoe and Hopking.

Book and Apron: Miss Dabinett. Side Slioavs: Rev. H. J. Williams and Messrs R. Spratt and B. Pascoe.

By far the largest winner at the Thames Trotting Club’s annual meeting was the Government, which collected the sum of £Bl4 4s 6d, made up as follows: Totalisator duty £3S6 15s, dividend duty £338 4s, stakes duty £46 ss, amusement tax £43 Os 6d. Total, £Bl4 4s 6{l. Actually speaking, the Government got more than the club from the meeting. RDAWING OF RAFFLES The following authorised raffle# were drawn last night, the results being:—Mrs A. S. Sumner, velvet hand-worked cushion, No. 50; Mrs* Goodwin, hand-worked wool cushion, No. 20, Mr L. A. James, haml-work-ed supper (loth, No. 23; Miss M. K. Stevenson, cream hand-worked supper cloth, No. 17; Mr H. W. Hopkins, hand-worked bed-spread, No. 12; Mrs W. E. Busch, hand-worked supper cloth, No. 41. The various stalls and the sideshows were well patronised- during both evenings, and good business was recorded. Amongst the donations of blooms was a large consignment from the Waihi Beautifying Society’s gardens. The show generally was a pronounced success, showing rather bettor returns than last year. The president (Mrs. Loach) and the lion, secretary (Mrs E. A. Wilson) are to be congratulated on the results achieved.
