LIQUOR LEADS TO TROUBLE

WIFE APPLIES FOR PROHIBITION ORDER GRANTED BY THE COURT Pound drunk in Seddon Street on October Ist a first (statutory) offender appeared before Messrs E. Morgan and VV. If. Toy, J’s.P., at the Waihi Police Court yesterday forenoon and was convicted and discharged. The man's wife was in attendance and asked that a prohibition order should he taken out against her husband. In support she said he was addicted to drink, had been off work for the past fortnight, and had been coming home in an intoxicated state regularly. When he was not drinking things were quite happy in the homo and she had no reason to complain in any way of her husband’s conduct. A prohibition order had been taken out against him some two years ago and during its currency he had been much better than before it was issued.

Constable C. Dalboth, who made the arrest, said the man was addicted to drink and on calling at the home he (the constable) found that when under the influence of liquor domestic trouble resulted, the husband being responsible. Sergeant D, L. Calwell informed the Bench that cases such as this gave the police quite a lot of trouble and his experience was that the women were generally very reticent, and disinclined to appeal to the court for protection. When they did so there was usually good reason for their action. Accused, when called upon, objected to an order being made, but the Bench decided that it was in his best interests and the interest of his wife and family that the application should be granted and an order was issued for twelve months.
