CONDITIONS DURING MONTH OF AUGUST FROSTS, LOW TEMPERATURE The local observer, Mr M. F. Haszard, reports on weather conditions in Waihi for the month of August as follows; — Barometer at 8 a.m. (corrected): Mean for month, 29.780 inches; maximum for month on 14th, 30.250 inches; minimum for month on 21st, 28.925 inches: difference between highest and lowest readings, 1.325 inches. Temperature in shade 24 hours previous to 8 a.m.: Highest temperature, 63.5 deg. Fah., on 17th and 19th; lowest, 25.4 deg. Fall., on 2nd; approximate mean temperature for. month, 48.6 deg. Fah.; difference between highest and lowest readings, 38.1 deg. Fah.

Temperature in screen at 8 a.m.: Average for month, 47.6 deg. Fah. Temperature on grass; Lowest reading, 19.0 deg. Fah., on 2nd; warmest night, 54 deg. Fah., on 20th; average temperature at night, 35.1 deg. Fah.; temperature of earth 2ft down, 51.7 deg. Fah. Wind: Maximum mileage, 260 miles on 21st; total for month, 2100 miles; daily average, 67.7 miles. Rain: Total for month, 7 inches; maximum fall in 24 hours, 1.98 inches qp 19th; number of rainy days, 10. Sunshine: Total for month, 183.8 hours: maximum sunshine, 10 hours on 28th; daily average, 5.9 hours; sunless days, 6. REMARKS A cold month with 15 frosts, the most severe being on the 2nd, when 1 13 degrees were recorded. The rainfall has been below the average for August, though greater than that of last year. Rain fell on 11 days as compared with 20 last year. Owing to the number of frosts the earth temperature has been low but is now starting to rise.
