ANZAC DAY

WAIHI COMMEMORATION SERVICES THE ARRANGEMENTS The committee entrusted with the arrangements for fittingly commemorating Anzac Day—Thursday next —has practically completed its work and should the weather prove propitious the service will be held on the Recreation Reserve. In the event of rain it will take place in the Academy Theatre, which has kindly been placed at the disposal of the committee by Mr Allen. The military, scouts and guides and the fire brigade will assemble at the Seddon Memorial in time to move off in procession to the grounds at 2.30, accompanied by the Waihi Federal and Salvation Army Bands, and with Lieutenant W. N. Verry as marshal. On arrival at the reserve the troops will be drawn up, with the returned soldiers in the post of honour, and the service, over which the Mayor, Mr W. M. Wallnutt, will preside, will be opened at 3 o’clock with a hymn,in which the massed choirs of the local churches will lead the singing. Following prayers an address appropriate to the occasion will be given by the Rev. J. D. McFarlane, of St. James’ Presbyterian Church, and the clergymen of other denominations will participate in the subsequent proceedings, which will close with the pronouncement of the Benediction and the sounding of the Last Post. A collection will be taken up, the proceeds to go to the Waihi branch of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association. The order of the procession on leaving the memorial will be as follows: Massed bands, returned soldiers, territorials and cadets, fire brigade, Salvation Army guides and scouts, girl guides. Territorials will wear uniform and belt, without side arms.

There will also be the customary commemoration in St. John’s Anglican Church at 10.30 a.m. and after the general service holy communion for those who wish to thus remember departed relatives or friends. A collection will be taken up for blind soldiers.
