The annual meeting of the Ohiuenuiri Mines and Batteries’ Union will he held on Thursday next at 7.3 0 p.m. at the. Union Mall. To decide what form of farewell should be accorded Mr M. Paul, for many years mining inspector for the Hauraki district, who is retiring shortly, a public meeting is to be held in the Waihi Borough Council Chambers next Thursday evening. It is expected that there will he a representative attendance, as Mr Paul is widely known and much respected. ‘‘Prohibition orders, of which there arc a good few in Waihi, are treated with contempt,” said Sergeant D. L. Calwell in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. “Those against whom they arc issued take very little notice of them, and sometimes even fail to answer a summons.” The sergeant added that light lines did not seem to cause the offenders much worry. Should the weather conditions be favourable, the Waihi Federal Band, under the conductorship of Mr John Hardimau, will render the following programme on the hospital grounds to-morrow afternoon, commencing at :j o'clock:- —Hymn, “Rutherford”; march, “Ravcnswood” (W. Runnier); overture, “The Carnival” (Le Luc); intermezzo, “Cavalleria Rusticana”; dance characteristic, “Creep Mouse” (W. Rimmer); duet, "The Moon Hath Raised Her Lamp” (Bcnidict); trombone solo, “Sliding Jim” (Lovey), air varfe, “Rousseau’s Dream” farr. W. Rimmer); "The King.” A collection wilj he taken pu at the gates in aid of the hospital funds. A very successful social was held in tjie Methodist Sunday School room on Wednesday evening. The secretary of the Waihi Hospital Board (Mr J. W. Tetley) desires to thank the following for newspapers, periodicals and magazines for the use of patients: —Mesdames A. Williams, R. Handcock and Cullen, Dr. T. G. Short, Messers Thomson, Miller and Murray, the library and the Australian Kodak Company.

“The amount, plus a guinea costs, has been paid into court,” said Mr J. B. Beeche in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, when maintenance cases were being heard. “What is the position of the guinea?” queried Mr S. L. Paterson, S.M., with a smile. Mr Bceche indicated that in the ordinary course of events this might, be expected to find its way to his pocket, and the magistrate thereupon made an order to the satisfaction of counsel.

The directors of the Rising Sun Gold Mining Company have deputed one of their number (Mr A. R. Aitkon) to confer with the committee set up to approach the acting-Minister of Mines (Hon. J. G. Coates) on the proposal to use the company’s battery at Owharoa as a public crushing plant for the Ohinemuri district. The committee, after going into the terms and conditions submitted by the Rising Sun Company, made certain alterations and amendments and these, together with the original proposals, will bo discussed at a meeting in Waihi next week, at which Mr Aitken, with full power to act tor the company, will be present. It is anticipated that finality will be reached at this meeting, in which case the whole matter will be placed before the Minister with as little delay as possible, and if deemed necessary a deputation will bo sent to Wellington in support of the claims advanced in favour of Government assistance towards the improvement of the battery.

At the close o£ the ordinary business of the Waihi Borough Council on Thursday evening the Mayor (Mr W. M. Wallnutt) took occasion to refer to the approaching severance by Mr J. C. Ross of bis connection with the “Waihi Telegraph” as a member of the reporting staff. His Worship said he would like to express the council’s appreciation of that gentleman both in his capacity as a reporter and as a private citizen. Mr Ross bad given a great deal of assistance in connection with the work of the Waihi branch of the New Zealand Workers’ Educational Association and had also assisted and supported local sport. He would carry away with him the good wishes of and council and he (the speaker) hoped that in whatever sphere of activities Mr Ross engaged in in future he would have good health and prosperity. Mr Wallnutt then moved that the council convey to Mr Ross its appreciation and goodwill. Cr. Morgan, in seconding the motion, said it afforded him much pleasure in endorsing the Mayor’s good wishes, adding that he could vouch tor the faithful and capable manner in which Mr Ross bad recorded the proceedings of public body meetings which lie himself was connected with. The motion having been carried by acclamation, Mr Ross expressed his thanks to (he speakers for their kindly remarks and the extension of the council’s good wishes. Whatever little ho had done during his stay in Waihi had been a pleasure, and the town had been a good place to live in and he would look forward to hearing of its continued progress and prosper! 1 y.
