MEMBERS OF POUR EXPEDITION HALF FROZEN AND STARVING STILL HOPE FOR OTHERS Australian and N.Z. Cable. MOSCOW. July 12. Commandants Zappi and Mariano, who set out after the wreck of the Italia along with Professor Malmgren to trek to the north coast of Spitzbergen in the hope of finding the Hobby, were half frozen and exhausted when found by the Russian aviator Chuknovsky. They say they had abandoned hope. One of Mariano’s legs is useless. Professor Malmgren had been dead for a month. The Krassin at 6.40 a.m. found Malmgren’s companions in latitude 50.39 north, longitude 26.07 east. Mariano and Zappi were cheerful, though they had not eaten for thirteen days. The Krassin took them aboard and continued in the direction of Commander Viglieri's party, which is 20 miles away. The latest reports indicate good progress and that there is much free water. Commander Vigleri and his party are 42 miles from the Krassin. It is hoped the latter will reach the former party by mid-day on Thursday.
