THE NATIONAL DEBT OP , AUSTRALIA NEED FOR ECONOMY Australian and N.Z. Cable. MELBOURNE, January 6. In his annual address to the members of the Stock Exchange, Mr P. Woods, chairman, expressed concern at the rate at which Australia was borrowing. He said that economy with discretion appeared to be more necessary than ever. The national debt was increasing at a greater rate than it should, and this question should be carefully examined. For the past year borrowing had increased by nearly £35,000,00(1. There seemed to be a tendency to get everything under control except the cost of production and borrowing.
