MUTINY IN PRISON
WARDERS ATTACKED WITH HAMMERS
TROOPS QUELL DISTURBANCE
HEAVY CASUALTIES RESULT

A serious mutiny occurred in tho Presence gaol at Calcutta, arts ng onß ot the discontent engendered by tbe belief that political prisoners received better treatment; than other prisoners. The trouble came to a head when a uarder struck a prisoner. Eighteen hundred convicts refused to paradu, armed themselves with sticks and sledge hammers and attempted to rush Hie warders. They set fire to the jute slice’s and oil tanks. The warders fired.on them, hut the outbreak was not quelled till armed troop s and police arrived. The gaol is now under military control. The casualties are reported' to he heavy, and three are known to be dead. Sonic of the buildings were damaged by fire.
