The work of improving the borough gas service by overhauling, cleaning, and in seme instances replacing the pipes leading from the mains is tteadi'y pushed j forward with the limited working staff avoilable, and where the work hat) been completed there is a marked improve- j nient in the gas pressure, with no complaints as to variation in the supply. The condition ot some of the pipes lifted Roes to show that there has for some very considerable time been an extensive loss of gas in various parts of the town, and atter the first cost of replacement there should, when the overhaul is completed, be a marked saving in the gasworks department. The final meeting in connection with the orphanages' campaign was held in the Borough Council Chambers last evening. A statement was supplied by the treasurer (Mr W. M, Jackson), showing that a grand total of £2BO Os 7d had been raised tcr the fund, made up as follows:—Central School, £lO 8s 6d; South School, £lO ; East School, £6 7s; Plains School, £3; Waikiuo School, £2 15s; Waitokauri School lis 6d ; Academy Theatre first metinoe, £3, second matinee, £7 6s 6.1, total, £lO 6s 6d; Everyone's Theatre matinee, £6 2s6d ; mines' collection, £l9 17s; band collection, £1 6a; ladies' collection, £SB Os 6d; mining officials, £l4 Is; professions, £l4 4s; busines3 (town collection), £9l 5s 7d, retiring co'lection, Waikino (per Itev. J£. if. Bamford), £1 15s 61. On the motion of the chairman (Mr Donaldson), seconded by Rtv. V. Tucbei, it was resolved that the statement be receivnd and adoptedi that a cheque and a copy of statement be sent to the treasurers of the fund. Appreciation was expressed of the generous response given to the appeal both for workers and for fund.*, special reference being made to the handsomo return of £63 from the schools, and to the successful result of the canvass of the town by the ladies.
