Mr Austen Chamberlain, Chancellor of the Exchequer, stated in the House of Commons that the Government was not in communication with the American Government for the cancellation of the European war debts, neither wa.s the Government prepared to approach America with the suggestion that the United. Kingdom would cancel half the debts owing her on condition that the United States accept responsibility for the other half, which amounted to about £600.000.000. !
