WAIHI COUNCIL ELECTION

VOTING TAKES PLACE TOMORROW.

THE STREET. SPEAKING ISSUE

Tile visit to Waihj of His Excellency Ihe Governor-General and Lac'jy Jellicoe appears to have so overshadowed other matters that little or 'nothing has been heard of the municipal elections, w?uen take plate to-morrow, and ifo doubt in a lesser degree the facts that Mr IX DonakLon takes 'the mayoral chair nnopnosed and only eleven candidates 1 ave been nominated Mr the ten scat,; on the Borough Council have been factors contributing to the lack of public interest shown. The candidates tor the Council are Messrs J. J. Callaghan, W. J. Conies, H. B. Dale, N. J. Moon, A. Parry, and H. A. Pipe, retiring members, who offer themselves for re-elec-tion, and Messrs E. Fitton, 11. G. Harris, A- Parker. J. F. Robertson, and S. H. Walmsley. none of whom, with the exception of the laist-named, have previously sat round the Council ,table. Air Walmslicv resignctl olfi'.r to go on war service. The polling booths will be af-. the Borough Council Chambers, liasr.ardstieit; the Waihi Hospital, Ttiomeysiivel, and Mr_W. Micks' late grocery store in {tarry Bond. The Town Clerk (Mr ,J. .). Ritchie) will act as returning ollucr. with headquarters at the Council Cl’.ambers, from which the results of the poll will bo announced. The hours of (lolling mil! be from 9 a.in. to 7 p.m-, am! voters would do well to remember to make a cross (X) in the .squares opposite to the names of the cniuricatcs fur whom they desire to vote.

Voters will do well fo (attend the central polling booth ai- the Borough Chambers as early in the day as is possible to avoid' crowding. The necessity for recording votes early is obvious, us the space available at the Chambers is limited, and it is desirable that the hours approaching 7 p.m., the time fixed for the closing of Iho booths, should lie left free for the day-shift workers coming from the mines. Simultaneously with the Council poll the 'electors will be asked to give a decision “for” or “against,” public speaking in the streets of "Waihi. Under the present borough by-laws this privilege is permitted only 'to religious bodies, othprs who wish to make public utterances being confined to the vicinity ol file Land Hall, which is in Martbnistreet, and almost opposite the head of Haszardcstreot west. The decision of tue Council to take a, vote on this issue was the upshot n;'a deputation u mouth or two ago from representatives of the local workers’ unions asking for the removal of the restriction. Should the public prove sympathetic to the deputation's reqnesi public speaking in life streets will bo thrown open to all. O'n the other hand should they noit approve of the existing order of things, limiting speaking to the locally mentioned, will continue.
