BREACH OF THE LAW. A case of interest to employers and employees was before Mr Free, S.M., in which tno Inspector of Awards proceeded against the Hawke’s Bay Farmer’s Cooperative Association for a penalty ot £lO on each of two charges of not paying tbp award rate to two employees in the grocery department, The evidence (Showed that fhe men concerned agreed, Owing to il)-health and a desire to retain their positions, to wprk at some shillings per week less than the award rote, but thb“*permisskm of the Labour Department was not obtained to tho arrangement. When a new manager of the firm was nppoin’ed ho applied io Hi ' Dejartmeit fo permission to cm ■ tmue paying uud»r the award rale, which was how the Department became acquainted wiih the breach. Tho inspector of Awards said the case was brought to show that tfyere must be no agreement between the employers and employees to accept lower wages than the award granted unless the consent of the Labour Department is obtained thereto. A fine ot £5 ou one charge and £lO on the other was imposed.
