NEW TELEPHONE SERVICE
METALLIC SYSTEM FOR WAIHI PEELIMINAEY WOKK STAETED Wort in connection with the improvement of the telephone service at Waihi aai between Waihi and Tauranga was commenced this morning by a gang of men under the direction o't Mr P. H, Mason, assistant telegraph engineer; of Auckland. Attention is lit si being given to the strengthening of the poles on the line running towards Tauranga, after which the installation of the new service at Waihi will be proceeded with. The intention is to introduce the metallic system, which is in voguo in most centres of importance throughout the Dominion, and is a great improvement, from a subscriber's standpoint, on the earth working system with which Waihi has perforce ' bien compelled to put up with sdiice telephones were introduced into the district. The great advantage of the new system, undor which the lines will be carried ia cables in place of the old aerial lines, which so frequently lead to contact, is that the overhearing by subscribers of conversations of others in communication will be completely eliminated, which could not be avoided under the present earth-working system, The change will bo welcomed, and should lead to the addition of new subscribers, as some tradespeople and others have shown a disinclination to avail themselves of the telephone service owing to the knowledge that there was an absence j of the privacy so essential in the cases of business conversations, The present! enuneiators at the Post Odiee bureau are I to be replaced, and this also should add to the cflicicncy of the new service.
