A well-known Auckland resident, Mr Charles Bagley, has returned after an •1 ven months' absence on a visit to the Old Country. “ England was in a very unsatisfactory condition,” said Mr Bagley, "more particularly in respect to food. We had to pay 8s 6d per lb for fish, meat 2s 6d lb, eggs each when we left, yet strange to say there did not seem to be any particular scarcity of anything. Wo were supposed to have only 6oz of sugar per week. Beyond that you could not buy at any price, yet you could go into any shop and buy as many sweets as you wanted, made with boiled sugar, at twopence per ounce. The Government’s excuse was that if they did not let them have sugar to make sweets, it would throw a great number of people out of employment.
