A visit to Puraknnui a/fords an indication of the effect of the hurricane last week (says the Otago Daily Times). A house situated near the water’s edge reminds one of a bomb raid, so badly is it'damaged. Some young ladies who' were occupants of this house had a terrifying experience. Another cottage was loft minus the verandah, and when the poles were wrenched off the flooring went with it. Windows were broken and boats were torn from the moorings. Largo trees wore uprooted, and two [off in close proximity to a farm house. The force of the gale may bo gauged from the fact that cribs 500 yards across the river were found to contain a coating of sand inside. A sensational motor car mishap occurred at Kaiapoi on Tuesday evening. A taxicab driver, having picked up two lady passengers, started his car, which suddenly backed rapidly over the river embankment, dropped about 12 feet, and came to a standstill in about Bft o'; water. The ladies were in the rear of the car, and the‘hood being raised they wore enabled to keep their heads above water. The screams of several ladies on the bank quickly brought assistance, and two men swam to the help of the , icar driver, who cut the hood of the car. The passengers were then assisted i through the opening, and were drawn | ashore by means of ropes, Doth were jn an eslwisted wudit ! ow. 1
