THE MAYORAL CANDIDATES. ADDRESSES AFTER THE POLL. On the declaration of the numbers the three Mayoral candidates oach addressed a few words. Mr Donaldson, who spoke tirst, said that he did not seek election again of hi 3 own choice, but was compelled to dp so by the strong representations made to him by local citizens to allow himself to be nominated. He was not bound to any party. He felt that the Mayor's duty was to extend equal treatment to all, irrespective of what section they belonged to. He knew that unpleasant things hqd been said against him 'lecause one strong section of the people were displeased, but he thought it a wiser course to allow the election to proceed quietly rather than draw public attention to untruo and trivial things which would only hare resulted in provoking bitter feelings in the town between different sections of the populace. He very heartily thanked those who had supported his candidature. He said he was broad-minded enough to allow the man who voted against him the right of his opinion. He specially thanked his ' committee for the splendid work they had | accomplished on his behalf, and concluded Ins remarks by calling for three cheers for the defeated candidates. Mr E. Morgau thanked the electors for the large amount of support acoorded to him, and he trussed that the remarks of the Mayor would appeal to all right-thinking men. Now that the battle was over all feehng should subside. Mr J. Irvine said that although defeated he was by no means discouraged. He expressed his thanks for the measure of support acccrded to him, and tii>id that probably at a future date ho would aga ft appeal to them for their support, when , he hoped to be more successful. !
