The court-martial of Dowling has opened. He is charged that while r. prisoner of war at Limberglalui- cam]) he voluntarily served in the Iris!) Brigade, formed and maintained ,hy tile German Government, that he endeavoured to peisuade other prisoners to join, and, finally, that he took a. certain course with enemy naval forces and landed in Ireland.

Sir 31. Bodkin, K.C., prosecuting , counsel, said that prisoner in 1907 was transferred from the Connaught Rangeis to tibe reserve, and was called up at the outbreak of the war. Ho accompanied the original expeditionary forces to France, and was taken prisoner by the Germans. He planned to concentrate the Irish prisoners at Limberglallin, where there were 2000. Three others—QuinTess, Keogh, and Bailey ~ stood out prominently among the prisoners. Quinle.ss. Keogh and Dowling seemed to ho acting together in von-t-evc with Sir Roger Casement, Counsel said that prisoner explained that he was washed ashore from a torpedoed vessel. Dowling went to the bank and changed £3l in silver into Irish notes. Counsel added that there was littl? douUt that ho was allowed to come over, to participate in an armed rebellJon in Ireland. -.
