The ceremony was performed by Air. V. F, Kerr-Tay- j lor. chairman of the Waitemata County Cwncil. There were also present:— Diiectors of the Company, Messrs John Blown, Paul Hansen, A. R. Morrison; Councillors F. Dye, T. Horton, John H. O'Neill, C. A. Cawkwell, A. M, Lang; Messrs H. Monro Wilson (Tramway Engineer), H. Gillillan (Secretary of the Company), J. Birch, (Engineer), M. It, Crcagli, and Higgins. Messrs Creagh and Higgins are the contractors. The monthly report of the chief fibre expert shows a serious decline in tho quantity of hemp produced in January, Di.riug that month 6323 bales wero graded, as compared with 12,086 bales la tho corresponding month last year, For the 12 months ended January 31, IMS), the gradings amounted to 83,60(5 bales, a decrease for the 12 months of 0'J.414 bales. The expert states that tho millers arc despondent at the outlook, and a good many will closo down if a further fall in price occurs. A:i extraordinary case was before the Polite Court yesterday. A case was se- down for hearing in which Nellie White was charged with having deserted her child, who -vas less than a year old, and having failed to adequately pit-vide for its maintenance. The accused did not, appear, but her mother did, and ..aid that her daughter was ill. Mr Djer, S.M., doubted this, as the daughter had called on him the previous day, when she appeared to be quite well. It subsequently transpired that, although tlie mother was trying to excuse tho daughter, she was the informant ill tho caso. His Worship made some remark to the effect that, it was a move- to have tin; child committed somewhere. Tho mother, who did not clearly indicatewhat her idea wn.«, said that tho magistrate 1 !- supposition was a wrong one, but a further remark, in which she said that she did.not wish to do any harm to her daughter, but wanted to benefit tho chilti, pointed to his Worship being aboiil right. Tin- ca.se was adjourned a week for the daughter to be well enough to appear.
