SCENE IN AUCKLAND COURT

A SOLICITOR FINED,

By Telegraph—Press Association. AUCKLAND, this day. A stormy scene in tho Police Court yesterday culminated in Mr. W. E, Hackett, a young member of the Bar, being lined by Mr. Dyor, S.M., for contempt of Court. Mr. Hackett was appearing for respondent in an application for judicial separation. The ovidouco had been taken, and tho magistrate was reviewing tho caso, when counsol rose and made some remarks. Ho was told to sit down, but persisted in addressing the Court, and tho Magistrate ordered him to bo taken into custody. Subsequently ho was brought before tho Court and fined £5, to be paid within one week, in default one week's imprisonment. LATEK. At the Police Court this morning Mr Hackett. the solicitor, who, was placed ill custody yesterday for alleged conlompt of Court by Mr. Dyer, S.M., fur refusing to sit dowji when ordered to do so, applied for an adjournment mid bail, in ordor-to consult a senior counsel. This was refused most emphatically by tho Magistrate, despite Mr, Hackott's persistent and strenuous protest, Mr. Dyer eventually saying, " I convict you for contempt of Court, and fine you £5. If the fino is not paid within one,week you will go to gaol for seven days." Mr Hackett roplied, " 1 may say this in no disrespect-I will not pay' that lino," Mr. Dyer: "It is a matter of perfect indifference to me."

Replying (o further remarks, Mr Dyer said that the application for n rc-ticuriiig could be made in the usual iv ay.
