BURGLARIES IN AUCKLAND
AN UNSUCCESSFUL ATTEMPT,
(Special to the Daily Telegraph.) AUCKLAND, this day.
| Another case of attempted burglary occurred in Auckland on Saturday morning. Tho caso makes the fifth whi6li s has been recorded in Auckland in the last four days, following closoly on the successful raids on tho premises e>; Messrs Shalloon (Yictoria-streot) and Griffiths (Parnell), and tho " Sonoma" and " llinemoa" boardingbouses in Alfrcd-streot.
Tlio latest victim to tlio attentions of the light-fingered gentry \ms been Mr. E. Larson, jeweller and curio-dealer, of Shortland-strcet. About 12.10 tho family, wh orcsirlo above the shop, heard a noise of breaking glaefr, and Mr. Larson rushed down stairs to find tho jewellory window smashed in, a heavy pieco of stone, six inches long, being found on the pavement outside. No ono was in sight at tho time, but somo residents in the neighbouring boardinghouso, who were alw awakened by tho noiso, wcro in time to sec a man disappear over tho crest of the hill by Priiicws-fitroot. Tho blind had been lowered on tho window, and the visitor must have beon disaplwinted to find empty shelves on tlio inside, as Mr, Larsen invariably takes tho precaution of removing all his valuables in the jewellery line into a safer repository for the night. He estimates tho loss of the plate glass window at £ll, but- this is covered b'y insurance. The attempt appears to be in all circumstances very similar to that at Mr. Shalfoon's premises, where a window wat> al<o smashed open with a stone.
