The Herald's Newcastle correspondent, wlio is investigating coal mailers, says that on tlio surfiico of tilings it would appear that the principle complaint against the vend is merely a gcneial protest against the scarcity ol coal suppliers and the difficulty of securing cargoes, hnt the ramifications of the vend are far-reaching, as the intestate coal trade is virtually in the hands of the vend and shipping combine, lielore any coal is sold lor shipment to foieign ports the buver has to disclose the tlestinntion. It has yet to he proved that there is any restriction ol trade, although it has heen established, and trade pusses through the channels ol the vend, it cannot he said that the vend has misused its power in the direction of putting up the price of coal. The Jliners' Federation favours the vend, as in it lies the hope of higher wages.
