Match Abandoned

The match between the Waihi and Waitete football teams 011 Saturday eiime to an abrupt termination after play had been in progress for about ten minutes. It appears that the trouble originated through a misunderstanding on the part of a player (Cook) of thu Waihi team. A. Morpeth (Waitete) was penalised by the referee, Mr. Corbett, when Cook, thinking the player penalised was 11 member of his team, addressed himself to the referee in a manner which led to tho latter ordering him off the field. At this stage McConnell (Waihi) came up to tho rcferco and expostulated, and ho, too, was ordered oil llie pound, tho hitter, in the heat of passion, using expressions that should . never be resorted to.

When the men took the field Waitete lined out with one short, there being only 14 players, while their opponents numbered ten or eleven. Up to the point when the trouble commenced the game had been keen, and hard play was the feature. After play had been stoppod, and during the wrangle, F. Forster, who captained the Wailiis, made an effort to supplement bis weakened team, which, with the absence of the two players who had been ordered off, waß reduced to eight men. 'lll this, how-* over, Forster failed, and after a brierT consultation with the team it was decided to abandon the match, and the men then walked off the field. The interval of play had resulted in neither side scoring, but as a result of the Waihi team taking the initiative in abandoning tho game, a win will no doubt ho recorded in Waitete's favour, and as it was a deciding match, the cup will go to Waitete if the Rugby Union awards the match in tho latter'e fnv-
