.We would remind parents that the amended regulations in regard to scholarships' and free places in secondary schools have been gazetted, abd that under them the opporltmi ties for entering tho higher fiohools are better than previopsly. A secondary school .most provide free places for as many as it can take in of the qualified pupils liviug in the
ducation district who. wish to | .ttend it. • Junior free places are to . je provided—Firstly, for' pupils mder 14 on December Ist who hold Edacatioti Board, National, )r any other approved scholarships; or,KaveV qualißed for an 1 Education Board or Junior National scholarships, or in the special examination * for junior free places held by the Department; or have obtained cer- ! tificafes of proficiency. ,' .Secondly, | for pupils; over 14 on Ist December: ] who have qualified at ..the special , examination, or have obtained cer- r tittcates of;proficiency, but in the | latter case the number admitted is ] not to exceed 10 per cent.: of all the free pupils. A junior free place is tenable for two years from the Ist of January next preceding the date of admission, but is to be determined by a pupil's 17th birthday. The same rule applies to District High Schools. A list of subjects of instruction is given, and it-is provided that the programme of each pupil shall be determined by the principal of tte school after consultation with the parents or guardian of the pupil; no pupil is to be compelled to take Latin or more than one language besides Bngli9li. Senior, free places ate tenable by pupils who hold Education Board, National.-Queen's, or other approved scholarships; who being under 16 on Ist December have passed the Civil Service junior or the special examination ; or who, whether : under 16 or not, have passed the Civii Service with credit or the matriculation examination. The senior free places are tenable till the uupil reaches his l9ih birthday. A secondary school is not to be required to admit pupils to free places at any other time than the beginning of the school year, unless it deems it, expedient to do so; nor to admit any pupil previously on the books as a paying pupil. If a school has not sufficient accommodation for all applicants for free .scholarship holders, both junior and senior, are to have the preference; then those who have qualified by the scholarship or special examination, in orderof merit; lastly, ' Other' applicants in tjie order, of their application for admission. • A free pupil whose parents remove more than five miles from the school at which tire pupil has attended, may j claim admission to any secondary or District High School nearer his home,;, .v ■■
