In tho House yosterday, Sir Joseph Ward male n statement in regard to tho increases it was proposed to make in tho pay of railway employees. It was, ho saidj intended to grant an increase of sixpence per d.-iy to shumors, poriors, labourers, eloauer,;, platelayers, linemen, and many other low grade workers, and an increase of Is per ilny to surfacemen. This would r.fficfc 45()9 men. In addition, it was intended to grant to onginemen, firemen, guards, etc., mi oixbt-hour day instead of nine Inur. Other ooiwes"iori3 woukl also bo miide. In future all men in the railwav workshops would bo paid 'fortnightly instead of monthly. This latter concession alone involved an oxtra vo*o this year ot £9500, and tho total concessions represented the emu ol i'G3.913 per annum. Ho considered that ibis large increase was fully justified, and had mat with the unanimous approval of tho Cabinet.
