THE SANITARY SERVICE
Silt, —Before last Council election thero were Councillors and candidal who advooatod that, the Council should take the sanitary eetviee over when the prejeirt Vv contract expired. But what do wo see now ? Tenders are called again. If the first was accepted, it would lay with one' tendor, as the Council would huye to com- , pensate the present con true! or if another provided the plant, But . why should not tbo Counoil tske it over themselves ? rim plant, including horses for same, would bo worth £OOO. I contend that if the present rates wero collected for another year, the profits, after paying all expenses, would pay off the purohnso money. I do not lmow of a town the sizo of tVoihi that 1 comes within 3d of the ratos charged bore, and in some instances the contractor has to bury it several feet, and not make land for his own use by'ploughing it in as is done here, I have it from good authority llmf thero are 1200 pans in uso. The service boinq weeklvand fortnightly, now, say 400 weekly at 9d per sorvice, would amount to £ls" per week } 800 fortnightly services would be , £33 6s, faking a yearly income, of £1638, and still thero aro fiomo in the Council who would turn this in* come into private pickets for another three years on the plea that we have no funds iotako. over tho plant. Sir, I hope you will fully report the discussion when the tenders aro oponed, so that the ratopayors can see who are their friends in tho Council in this matter.—l am, etc,, X-Eay,
