The Football Season
—..-»- Notes oii f Saturday's illatcfi
[By Looker Os.J It was anticipated that tho match played on Saturday would finish evonly, and that tho Korangahako boys would put Wtiihi on their rnefcde; but-, contrary to expectations, at the conclusion thero was :i substantial margin of points to Waihi's credit The v'.siting forwards, who are a splendid lot, were slightly .superior to Waihi's, but their backs, with the exception of tho half and full back, were rnsdiocritits. They seemed unable lo take tho ball, and lacked combination, Their kicking and tackling wore also weak, I cannot conceive why, after winning tho toss, Karaugabuke kicked with tho stm iu their oyes.
Tho local men played a fat superior game than thoy did the previous Saturday I against Waikino. The forwards put more Wo and dash into their play, and Iheir following up wis a grout doal bottor, Ttio backs (who wore in splendid Irim), excepting in tlio line-kicking, which could bo improved, played sploudidly. Thoir passing was short, clean and nippy, and when they got in motion it was a treat to seo thoui. Mcintosh (Waihi full) played his usual sound and consistent garno, and was always in his place when wanted, Hi had very littlo to do in tho first half, biv in tho second ep?tl bo pulled his side out of danger on a few occasions. Of the three-qucrter line, every man played up to his truo form, Poudivll and dandy wero particularly good, and it is hard to separate thorn. Poudrell (wing), I thinlc, w«s the hotter, and got in a groat deal of work. Ho made some dashing rnus, and was hard lo slop whon ho /jot I tho ball, His tries wero good ones, Ho is the mosi brill ant and consistent back in Wa'hi (his season. Laudy (wing) was in his eloineut, Ho guvo an admirable display, and mado tome nice Ho was very safe, and kicked sploudif'y,' ahhongh a couple of timos'ho forgot lo find tlio line. Forstsr (wing) shaped well, although tho work did not oorao his way, Ho bad bad luck in losing tho ball when ho got over tho line, and deservod a try.
Fwiear (livo-cightli) played a vaslly superior gamo to that which ho jlaycd at Waikino. Ho also made some nica openings, and handled the ball cleanly, His kicking and passing wore first class. Dirby (half) pm in some solid work, and got tho ball away smartly. Tlio forwards showed oxceUonl form, and gay.o a better display thn tlioy did nt Waikino. Considering thoy im-l-a sliglnly superior team, tb*y euno out of (ho ordeal all .right. Their following up was worth suing. It is litndiy fair to patticulnrise auy of (hem, but I thir'i special mention should bo mado of Soronsen for bis play on the lino out,
Tho wings (Gotlia and Lssllo) put in a lot of good work. Tho tor mu botlor than his opponent, Coltio had a hard nut lo crack in LYunblo, but iio did very ivol). • Johnston (Karangahake full) played a good game, and often (o\ his team out of difficultly, Hohadnllorcnkmtask boforo him, as ho waj on the dofousivo noarly all tbo time. '
Tho three-quarter line were exceedingly [Weak, although Delauore wasjair at times. McLean is not tho McLean of old, although he still retains his kicking power?. Ilia tackling and taking tho ball was wretched. McGruar also played disappointingly. Leech (fivo-ciijhth) wan not a success, boing very wo*k in all dopa'rtuiouts, Montgomery (linhj, a very yamgl player, gavo a creditable display. With a I littlo moro exporionco I think ho will have
a good future boforo him, Tho forwards, man for ran, were slightly better than their opponents, They f.'o a willing lot, and played with great dash and.combination. ( It must havo been very dishoartoning to thorn tbo way their bach played, Tbo front row men (dpi", and Caioy) aro a warm pai'-, and seomod to hook the hall who inver they wanted it, Clark, on tho line out, was excoplionally good, wuilo Miller was dashing in tho open, Of tho wing* Bramble was tho pick. Ho was very fast in following tip, and gave his opponont (Oottic) a lot of trouble; Kiecbone has playod bettor game.',
